The purpose of this practicum is to provide you with a unique, hands-on tutoring experience in which you will be challenged to develop your teaching skills and your communication skills. There is a tutoring component and a classroom component required with this practicum. The tutoring component will be experiential in nature and will expose you to many of the same challenges that you will encounter in your professional career. The classroom component will address specific problems that you may have with your tutoring experience, provide you with strategies to overcome these obstacles, and give you the opportunity to hear from other tutors on effective tutoring strategies.
This course requires a high level of commitment. Your job as a tutor is to have a positive impact on the student(s) that you are tutoring. As with teaching in a classroom, having an impact on a student requires a great deal of effort. Expect to spend no fewer than three hours per week devoted to helping out your student(s) and fulfilling the requirements of this course. The rewards for this commitment are personal growth, professional growth, and the joy of seeing the difference that you have made in a person’s life.
Course Requirements:
- Attend Class. We are only able to meet once a week so it is critical that you make it to class. I will use class to make important announcements and to plan activities for the following meeting. If you have excessive unexcused absences (more than one) it will affect your ability to be an effective tutor and I will consider giving you a grade of U.
- Attend all required Upward Bound Meetings.
- Show up on time for meetings and class.
- Check your email on a regular basis. I will notify you of meeting cancellations and other important news through email.
- Keep a journal logging your tutoring experience. The purpose of this journal is to relay observations that you make during your tutoring sessions. You can also use your journal to let me know of any frustrations and/or successes that you are having with your tutoring experience. Journals must be emailed to me by Thursday mornings at 9:00 a.m. For tutors attending the Thursday Supplemental Tutoring Sessions, journals are not required. Late journals will not be accepted.
- Complete all paperwork on each student that you are assigned (PROGRESS REPORTS).
- Be a positive role model for the students.
Appalachian State University recognizes accommodations for eligible students with disabilities. If you are a student with a disability and if you will be requesting accommodations, it is your responsibility to approach me for specific arrangements for this class.
